In 1946, the French fashion designer Louis Réard presented his new swimming costume in Paris and caused a real scandal. The bikini, a two-piece swimming costume that is very economical with the fabric used, was actually named after the Bikini Atoll. Besides the most famous wreck, the 300m long aircraft carrier "USS Saratoga", there are 9 other ships under water, which are now beautifully decorated with corals. They are located at an average depth of about 50 metres. The dive spots here are not really for beginners, but only for experienced wreck divers. Meanwhile, the administration of Bikini Atoll operates a diving centre with strict regulations: Every diver must have read the atoll's radiological status report. Bikini Atoll is especially popular with divers, as years of nuclear weapons testing in the atoll have created a wreck graveyard that is unique in the world. However, a short visit is said to be safe. To this day, the islands are not permanently inhabitable. Here too - as well as on a Japanese fishing boat - there were deaths from radiation sickness.īikini Atoll has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010. The radioactivity produced also caused enormous damage to the neighbouring islands of Rongelap and Rongerik. The hydrogen bomb "Bravo" was the most powerful bomb used.
